CHICAGO, Thursday, September 27, 2012. It looks like the final weekend of September will be a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the best of all Chicago has to offer. This weekend the Ryder Cup brings Tiger and Phil to Medinah Country Club, more great theater, Maestro Ricardo Muti kicking off his third season with the CSO, Cyndi Lauper in town to promote her upcoming Broadway in Chicago's Kinky Boots and lots more. Here are five good bets to get you started.
1. Screams in the Park.
Halloween is just around the corner so it's time to scare up some thrills.?? Screams in the Park kicks off this Saturday, September 29 and runs through Halloween (Wednesday, October 31) at MB Financial Park in Rosemont. Professional actors will take thrill-seeking visitors back in time as they enter the mansion of H.H. Holmes, the notorious serial killer whose crimes were chronicled in the best seller ?Devil in the White City.? Screams takes place in the basement of the MB Financial Park at Rosemont parking garage, located at 9703 Bryn Mawr Ave.? Tickets range from $15 to $20.
2. Enjoy the Great Outdoors at Randolph Street Market Festival.
Eat, Drink and discover some great finds at the trendy Randolph Street Market Festival. This outdoor European-style, indoor-outdoor market features 250 select purveyors of high quality goods including vintage and modern furnishings, clothing, jewelry and collectibles, as well as food and flower vendors, a full bar with wine, beer and liquor offerings and live musical entertainment. Saturday, September 29, 10a.m. to 6p.m. and Sunday, September 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Two entrances: 1350 block of W. Randolph Street and 1340 W. Washington Street (between Ada and Ogden). $8 admission, good for both days, when tickets are purchased online $3 admission for students when purchased online; must present valid student ID. 3. Sample gourmet foods and wines at Chicago Gourmet 2012 at Millennium Park.
This popular gourmet gathering returns to Chicago for its' 5th year.?? At $159 + tax for a one-day pass it?may seem a little pricy but when you break things down that's only $1 per chef--and with a who's who of over 160 of Chicago's best chefs and restaurants including Stephanie Izard, Rick Bayless, Tony Hu and others it's almost a bargain. The fest is all you can eat and drink so come early and stay late.? General admission allows full access to the festival area, which includes numerous culinary tasting pavilions, live cooking demonstrations presented at 30-minute intervals on the Bon App?tit Main Stage and the Bon App?tit Culinary Stage, as well as premium wine and spirits tastings and seminars. 4. Oktoberfest @ St. Alphonsus .
Chicago is overflowing with Oktoberfest celebrations but Oktoberfest @ Alphonsus is one of the biggest and best.? Three days of beer, brats, live entertainment and fun are on tap for the thousands that fill the streets for this authentic annual Oktoberfest celebration.? The fest offers all the usual Oktoberfest favs with? homemade bratwurst and beer in a traditional beer garden setting, along with ooom-pah music and more.?? $5.?? September 28-30.? Friday: 5p.m. to 10p.m.; Saturday: 11a.m. to 10p.m.; Sunday: 11a.m. to 7p.m. Southport and Lincoln Ave.
5. The MCA Global Stage Season is Back.
You know it's Fall when Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art's popular Stage Performance series returns. This weekend South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company (creators of the Tony Award winning War Horse) and renowned artist William Kentridge team up to create a moving theater work with animated film, live performances, South African-inspired music, and wood puppets.? The performances take place September 27-30; 7:30p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3p.m. Sunday in the Edlis Neeson Theater, 220 East Chicago Avenue.?
