Interview: What's Up With Comic Book Artist Tony Moore? | Thrash Lab

Tony Moore is an American comic book artist (and cosmic cowboy), whose work consists mainly of genre pieces, most notably in horror and science fiction, with titles such as Fear Agent, The Exterminators, and The Walking Dead. Tony?s illustrations don?t just speak to comic collectors, but he is certainly an icon in that space. His work as an illustrator represents the art of great storytelling and character development. In this awesome interview we scored, Tony shares his horror movie recommendations, cool shit to put on our radar and he offers a lot of aha moments. Read on ?

?Describe your style as an artist and describe your ?job? (for dummies that don?t know, or for us who just want more detail): Hmmmm. Gruesome? Funny? I grew up reading MAD Magazine and old horror comics, so in my mind, horror and humor together are like peanut butter and jelly. I?m a reference hound and a detail obsessive, but i also think expressive cartooning in a must in visual storytelling. As for my job, I wake up every day and fill myself to the gills with caffeine and sit in my pajamas, drawing robots and monsters and the rugged men in tights who punch them. I mostly make my nut in comics, but I?ve done poster work for movie companies and album covers and stuff, too. When it comes to comics, it?s a lot of time in isolated deep concentration, trying to visualize every scene from multiple angles, and move though them and frame each scene in an engaging way that captures the mood of the thing, and then portray the events in a relatable way using body language and facial expressions. Basically, if a comic book were a movie in production, I?m everybody on the set except for the guy who wrote it. Design, lighting, cinematography, direction, acting? you name it, I have to put it on the page.

Were you the kid in school growing up that doodled in his notebook all class instead of taking notes? If so, what class actually kept your attention? What was your go-to thing to illustrate in your notebooks? I drew all the time in school, but it wasn?t that I wasn?t paying attention, it was more that i had to keep my brain occupied or it shut down. If I was just sitting there letting information wash over me, even if I was trying to take notes, if it wasn?t a creative kind of subject, then it was all just water off a duck?s back. But if I was drawing, I could usually take minimal notes and remember everything the teacher told me. I had a chemistry class first thing in the morning in high school, and my teacher noted to my mom that if i wasn?t drawing, then I clearly just wasn?t awake. The only classes I took that didn?t engage me were my math classes. I was in the Advanced Placement programs of most of the subjects I took, and got good grades in everything despite being a terrible student. I just kind of hated (and continue to kind of hate) doing math. I was a really avid role-playing game nerd, so I loved Dungeons & Dragons, Cyberpunk 2020, and all the White Wolf games like Vampire: The Masquerade. So, I loved drawing elves and orcs and vampires and monsters, and all the crap that pays my bills now, only slathered in teen angst.

At what point in your life did you become confident or receive a compliment that gave you the reassurance you were on the right path creatively? In preschool, I had a lady offer to trade me a painting i had done for a wooden toy tow-truck. I don?t even remember what the painting was of, but clearly it was awesome. A little later, I had my first solo art show, still when i was in preschool, and a guy from the local paper came out and interviewed me about it. I thought I was King Shit of Cool Town, and was sold on the artist?s life for the rest of my days.

Do you have any staple trademarks a viewer could find in all your work? Rugged men with big chins and stubble, and people who get hit in the head and their hands curl into weird spasm poses. My grandfather was a tough as nails old son of a bitch with a wry sense of humor and a chin like a goddamn cinder block. In my head, all heroes basically start with my grandfather as the basic template, and then I mix and match the details. The other thing, with the hands, I stole from Don Martin, because I always thought his work in MAD was hilarious, and you?d be surprised at how common head trauma is in comics and how often I get to apply it.

For us non-comic illustrators, and us non-comic writers can you explain the process of how it works collaborating with a writer? How much does the illustration influence the creative story? How much freedom do you have? Basically, I get what looks like a movie script, and then I set out to make that into a series of images that tell that story. Different writers have different styles, and different projects require different relationships with the writers. I?ve been fortunate enough to largely avoid assembly line-like jobs where I?m just another cog in the machine. I mostly get to work with my friends, who welcome the creative collaboration. We tend to talk on the phone a bit and cook up some action scenes or cool visual set-pieces to pepper into the stuff they?ve got going, and every once in a while, I might have some missing piece that helps pull the events together story wise. Once the script comes, I?ve generally got whatever freedom I want, but I generally feel like that at that stage my job is to effectively tell the story at hand. If the proposed pacing or panel layout isn?t as affective as I think it could be, I?ll rejigger it a bit to make sure the events that need to happen are there and it carries the appropriate mood. That?s the job. Tell the story. Pretty pictures are nice, but if you can?t tell what?s going on, then I?ve screwed it up. And then lastly, the writers will often give it a last pass, fine-tuning the dialogue to work as well as possible with the art I?ve given back to them.

Is there a particular writer that you felt screamed your style and complimented your visions most? Rick Remender and I have been partnered up for several years now, and we get along like a house on fire. And I think when we get to spit-balling ideas and starting to cook up some stuff, we make some really fun stuff. I don?t wanna toot our collective horn, but you dragged it out of me. Magic. Okay? What we make is magic. Seriously, though, we?re on the same creative wavelength and we?ve been afforded a lot of opportunities to bring some crazy shit to the table, and I?m super proud of all of it. He?s an artist too, and we speak the same language, creatively speaking, like some kind of creepy art twin hive mind.

What comic book character that you have illustrated (or that someone else has drawn) do you feel best represents you? Heath Huston is the protagonist of Fear Agent, which I co-created with Rick Remender. I put a lot of myself into him, and i imagine him physically as a tough-guy idealized version of myself, if I wasn?t a sedentary, soft tub of guts with great hair. He really is the biological lovechild of myself and Rick. I think in some weird sad way, he?s a real portrait of the both of us, for better and worse.

What is your spirit animal? The dung beetle. Nature?s Sisyphus.

With Halloween on the mind, do you have any special plans? Traditions? Favorite horror films? We feel like it might be your favorite holiday, so do tell? I wish. I?m a dad and under deadline, so no parties for me. I used to love to go all out. Big parties, and spend a day or two building a ridiculous costume. I live out in the sticks now, so I don?t even have kids wander by for Trick Or Treat. That said, though, my kid is two and a half years old now, and she?s getting big on the idea of dressing up as stuff, as well as getting a metric ton of candy, so hopefully i can ignite something there and live vicariously through her and a mutual love of the holiday. That said, I?ll try to soak up all the greats, especially the stuff from the 70s. Last House on the Left, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, and of course, Rosemary?s Baby. A horror movie marathon is pretty commonplace in my office, like once every couple of weeks at least. It?s one of my biggest passions, right behind comics. Halloween is my Christmas.

What is overrated culturally right now? What is underrated? Ignorance is overrated. We live in a culture where anti-intellectualism is celebrated and I think it?s really damned sad. Science is criminally underrated. I think the Curiosity Mars rover gave us a tiny little cultural taste of what it felt like when we put men on the moon. But we don?t do that anymore. And while we all can?t be astronauts, I think astronauts are like the superheroes of science, the faces that boys and girls can look up to and idolize, and get kids interested in the big ideas science has to offer. I?ve got a 2 year old daughter and all I want is for her to look at the stars and know that those are other places, not just lights in the sky, and to really try to understand the complex beauty of the universe we live in, not just be another dead-eyed Wal-Mart zombie caught up in the stupid trivialities and pointless melodrama on TV, and frankly, most of most people?s lives. I want her to think big, dream big. I?d much rather her be excited to hear Neil Tyson and Alice Roberts than to have any care for what Snooki and The Situation are about. If I can pull that off, I think I will have been a pretty good dad.

What is something or someone you recommend the people reading this interview have on their radar? Marvel?s MARVEL NOW stuff is going to be hot. They?ve got some really inspired recruiting on the books coming up in that line. My pals Rick Remender and Jason Aaron are doing some of the most exciting stuff I?ve seen in years over there. Also, Rick and I are proud to announce the first of 2 omnibus collections of our baby, Fear Agent, which comes out late this year from Dark Horse Comics. It?s a gargantuan tome of sci-fi space opera/western fantasy, and handsome as all Hell. A really beautiful presentation of some of my favorite work of my career. Beyond that, Jason Aaron and RM Guera?s SCALPED series just wrapped up, and i think it?s one of the best damn things ever printed. I can?t recommend it highly enough.

Lastly, what are you working on now? I?m really excited to talk about this one, finally. I?m working on part of that big MARVEL NOW event that I mentioned before, with Brian Posehn (Mr. Show, The Sarah Silverman Program) and Gerry Duggan (Attack of the Show, Infinite Horizon), on the relaunch of DEADPOOL, who is Marvel?s resident smart-mouthed mercenary, with probable deep mental health issues. It?s not a reboot, but just kind of a fresh reestablishing and jumping on point for folks who might have been interested in checking him out but were dissuaded by the years of backlog. This story involves a necromancer/political zealot who, in an effort to save America from itself, has resurrected all the dead Presidents of America. Of course, they come back evil and twisted, and must be stopped. Since they can?t have The Avengers seen going toe-to-toe with the country?s great icons gone corrupt, SHIELD recruits the one guy who has the skills, lack of scruples, and the plausible deniability to get the job done. It?s really funny, and absolutely brutal. I?ve drawn more viscera in the first few issues of this book than I have possibly in the entire rest of my career combined. Still, it?s considerably more lighthearted than just about everything I?ve done, so the cartooning is a bit more relaxed and a real joy to work on. We?re all having a ridiculous amount of fun on it, and I don?t think any of us thought we?d ever get away with it like we have.

Accentuate Your Home With This Helpful Advice. | Home Town

Should you be anxious about caring for home improvement all around your residence, you will be not by yourself. Like other things, performing a correct redecorating work requires the proper guidance and knowledge. This plumbers cape town post features sound advice and suggestions that will help you help make your next home remodeling task a success.

Plumbing

A great way to improve value of your property as well as it?s functionality is always to add another bathroom. Make an effort to position it inside an region that previously has access to plumbing related, like close to a kitchen area or in the basements. A washroom that only includes a potty and basin will still be a pleasant inclusion.

If you are intending a home advancement project which involves turning away from the normal water or eliminating domestic plumbing furnishings, make alternate agreements in case stuff get held up. By way of example, you don?t would like loved ones simply being caught up with out a basin or bathroom across the weekend break, in the event the delivery service of the new one receives organised up.

For your price range-minded house owner taking care of a domestic plumbing home improvement task, plastic-type material Pvc material piping tends to make an entirely suitable substitute for high-priced copper piping. PVC is extensively examined and useful for several years with out hazard or failure. It is easy to deal with and extremely long lasting. The cash saved by using Pvc material does apply to more visible, usable renovations.

By no means try and do electrical or plumbing function your self regardless of how straightforward the job may appear. Hire a specialist to complete the job, and make certain that they have all of the appropriate permits that your state demands. When you don?t validate that you might get a badly done job without any recourse.

Copper pipe is the greatest choice for domestic plumbing renovations, when the funds are readily available for it. Although safe and effective plastic-type domestic plumbing is out there, still it drops much lacking copper, when it comes to durability and reliability. All plumbers are familiar with copper and have plenty of experience working on it. Copper will also match up existing domestic plumbing of more aged homes being renovated.

Some redesigning project are easier than others. Be realistic regarding your measure of expertise before you handle any home improvement venture. Painting and wall paneling are perfect tasks for beginners and might rapidly enhance a room. Plumbing and electric powered assignments would be best remaining to competent experts except if you have expertise in these locations.

If you are increasing your home to boost its purchase benefit, concentrate on the crucial amounts first. Seeking to renovate the full residence can become exceedingly pricey and supply a diminishing roi. Items such as external house siding, plumbing lighting fixtures, lighting, and appliances for the kitchen, even so, will likely be universally pleasing when you make an effort to market the property.

So as we discussed, home improvement will not be as challenging as it can certainly seem. It is actually concerned regarding study and asking them questions, but it is worth every penny ultimately. Using the earlier mentioned recommendations in your mind, you need to be smarter when it comes to boosting stuff all around your home.

Pakistani army strategy in question after attacks

MINGORA, Pakistan (AP) ? The Taliban's horrific attack on a female teenage activist in this scenic corner of Pakistan's northwest was the latest in a series of assassination attempts by militant sleeper cells in the area over the last year, each carried out with targeted shots to the head.

The insurgents activated their networks in the Swat Valley to take advantage of the army's decision to reduce its presence and accelerate the transition of security and governance to civilian authorities in the wake of a big offensive in 2009 to push out the Taliban.

The valley is in little danger of falling under the militants' control again anytime soon. But the resurgent threat raises questions about the army's ability to hand over control to civilians in Swat and other areas of the northwest where soldiers are fighting the Taliban, a fundamental part of the military's counterterror strategy.

Building effective civilian government and law enforcement is not only critical so the military can withdraw, but also to address local grievances related to development and justice that can fuel support for the insurgents.

The Taliban shot and wounded 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai as she was heading home from school in Swat's main town of Mingora on Oct. 9. The militants targeted the girl because she was an outspoken opponent of the group and promoted "Western thinking," such as girls' education.

The militants have carried out at least half a dozen other assassination attempts against their opponents in Swat since the end of last year, killing four people and wounding several others, said security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Haji Zahid Khan, a member of a major tribal council in Swat, was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in August but managed to survive. Khan criticized the army and police for not taking his case seriously enough, which he believes emboldened the militants.

"Had they arrested the culprits in my case, the network that was working could have been traced," said Khan. "The Malala incident could not have happened."

Investigations into the shootings indicated the attackers came from Afghanistan, where many militants fled following the army offensive in 2009, said Kamran Rehman Khan, the top government official in Swat. The militants worked with networks of sympathizers in Swat who provided weapons, ammunition, cell phones and other logistical support, he said.

The insurgents activated their networks to take advantage of the army's decision to reduce its presence in Swat. The military has decreased the 40 checkpoints it had in the area by almost half in the last year, although the number of troops in the valley has stayed the same, said Khan, the senior government official.

The army launched its offensive in Swat in the spring of 2009 with about 25,000 troops and originally planned to hand over control to civilian authorities and pull out over a period of about two years. That hasn't happened because the civilians haven't proven capable of handling security, say military officials.

The number of police in Swat has more than doubled to about 3,700, said Khan, but police in the country routinely lack sufficient resources and would likely have trouble keeping the militants at bay.

For this reason, the army still has about 12,500 soldiers in Swat and has plans to build permanent bases for some of them. The military hopes to reduce the number of troops by 50 percent next year, but experts are doubtful.

"The civilians don't feel confident enough to manage the area in the absence of the military, so the military will stay," said Pakistani defense analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi.

The inability to pass the baton to civilians in Swat raises questions about what the military plans to do in the adjacent tribal region, which serves as the main sanctuary for the Taliban in the country and is even less developed than Swat. The army has over 100,000 troops fighting in the semiautonomous region, and the experience in Swat indicates the generals will have difficulty pulling them out.

"I don't think they will be able to withdraw easily from the tribal areas because they have not been able to control them successfully and there is hardly any civilian structure to hand off to in these areas," said Rizvi.

The military may be more effective at handling security, but there are concerns its long-term presence could fuel resentment that could be exploited by the militants. Human rights organizations have accused the army of rounding up scores of suspected militants in Swat since the 2009 offensive and never producing them in court ? allegations denied by the military. The practice "can create hatred against the army," said Khan, the tribal council member.

But that doesn't necessarily mean residents want the military to leave. Even with the recent attacks, security in Swat is far better than it was a few years ago when the Taliban routinely beheaded people and left them in the streets as a warning.

"If the army goes," said Dolat Khan, a drugstore owner in Swat, "there could be a civil war."

Honey Boo Boo fakes sleep to avoid Dr. Drew

HLN

Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson tries to get out of an interview on "Dr. Drew."

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Being a reality TV sensation can be downright exhausting -- at least that seems to be the case for 7-year-old Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, who tried to squeeze in a nap during a recent chat with Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Actually, the pint-size personality wasn't really sleeping. In a preview clip from Tuesday night's episode of "Dr. Drew," the "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" star fakes a few Zs just to get out of answering Pinsky's questions.

"Honey Boo Boo, you all right?" Pinsky asked when the tyke stretched and turned away from him. "Let me ask you some questions."

But she had other plans. After letting out a long groan, she shut down -- eyes closed, head down.

"Is it difficult to be on TV?" a persistent Pinsky asked. When snores were his only answer, he took a different approach. "Is there something exciting you'd like to talk about?"

The sleep act continued, even after Honey Boo Boo's mother, better known as Mama June to fans of their TLC show, chimed in.

"Alana, come on so we can get this done and go," she urged.

Honey Boo Boo kept up the act, and frankly, who can blame her? The kid's been on a madcap media tour lately that's seen her visit dozens of shows, including a stop to "Jimmy Kimmel Live," where she even? made a presidential pick. So, while she was faking the snooze with the good doctor, she has plenty of cause to feel tuckered out and plain tired of TV.

Maybe that's why she didn't have anything good to say about the experience once Pinsky finally roused her.

When asked if she likes being on TV, she shot back a cranky, "No!"

Why?

"Because fans come up to me, and I hate it."

Or maybe just because she really needed a nap after all.

Find out what else -- if anything -- Honey Boo Boo had to say when "Dr. Drew" airs Tuesday night at 9 p.m. on HLN.

Russia's Rosneft buys out TNK-BP

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft strengthened its hold on the country's lucrative oil industry when it sealed a deal Monday to buy TNK-BP, the 50-50 joint venture between BP, the British energy country, and a group of Russian oil oligarchs.

The deal will allow Rosneft, already the country's top oil producer, to increase its global profile. The new combined company will leapfrog ExxonMobil Corp. to become the world's largest publicly traded producer of oil and gas, in terms of output. ExxonMobil's latest earnings show its daily output at 4.2 million barrels of oil, below the expanded Rosneft's projected 4.6 million.

As part of the deal, BP succeeds in unloading its stake in a troublesome joint-venture. In return, it gets $17.1 billion in cash from Rosneft and a 12.84 percent stake in Russia's biggest oil company. The British company is also planning to use some of the money it's reaped from the sale to raise its stake in Rosneft to 19.75 percent. BP will also get two seats on the Russian company's nine-member board.

In a parallel development, Rosneft said it had agreed to buy the other 50 percent in the joint venture from AAR, for $28 billion, and that the deal was "entirely independent of the transaction with BP." AAR confirmed that a memorandum of understanding has been signed, but added that it is still subject to other conditions.

Rosneft, formed in 1993 out of the former Soviet state oil and gas authority, is currently 75 percent owned by the government. The remaining shares are either traded publicly on the Russian stock market or owned by the company and its managers. It is not yet clear how much of Rosneft's existing shares BP will take or if the Russian company will have to issue new stock to seal the deal.

Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin broke the news about the deal Monday afternoon to President Vladimir Putin, telling him that the deal would be worth about $61 billion.

"This is a good big deal which is important not only for Russia's energy sector but for the entire Russian economy," Putin said in remarks carried by Russian television.

Sechin told Russian news agencies following his meeting with Putin that Rosneft would probably use loans from foreign banks as well as funds raised from the sale of non-core assets to pay for TNK-BP. Rosneft should expect to take over TNK-BP entirely within the next six months, he said.

Russia is an important part of BP's business, accounting for a quarter of its oil production. BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley has looked to the country's vast oil resources as a key ingredient to the company's recovery from the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The TNK-BP joint venture has been troublesome ? albeit lucrative ? for BP. Dudley served as TNK-BP's chief executive until summer 2008 when he was forced to leave Russia after being denied a visa. Dudley and TNK-BP's Russian billionaire shareholders have had serious disagreements over the company's long-term strategy and Dudley subsequently complained that the Russian shareholders were behind a campaign of harassment.

In 2011, relations worsened when BP tried to strike a separate partnership with Rosneft to explore for oil beneath the Arctic Ocean. AAR subsequently sued and got the deal blocked, alarming BP investors.

Dudley said in the statement on Monday that "BP intends to be a long-term investor in Rosneft - an investment which I believe will deliver value for our shareholders over the next decade and beyond."

Ildar Davletshin, an oil and gas analyst at Renaissance Capital, said the deal "strategically looks very positive for BP" which has replaced "a private partner for a strategic national company which has much bigger access to resources in Russia and has much bigger political support in this country."

Davletshin added that Rosneft will more likely be run "in the interests of shareholders" rather than serving the Kremlin's political agenda since BP will have two board members. Rosneft has been involved in an array of overseas projects largely viewed as unprofitable but designed to prop up the Kremlin's foreign policy.

Sechin sounded optimistic about their tie-up with BP, saying that his company "would benefit from BP's experience and its track record of implementing best international practices in Russia."

Rosneft shares jumped more than 3 percent on the announcement but rolled back to trade only 1.6 percent higher at 218 rubles per share.

BP shares were up 0.57 percent to 453 pence following the announcement.

Ratings agency Fitch last week warned Rosneft of a possible rating downgrade because of the TNK-BP deal. Fitch said the Russian company should have no problems raising the money to pay for 50 percent, but said the purchase of the other 50 percent could require so much borrowing that it could lead to a downgrade.

K-State moves past Oregon for 3rd in BCS standings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Only in the BCS standings does Oregon get passed.

Kansas State moved ahead of the Ducks and up to No. 3 on Sunday behind SEC rivals Alabama and Florida.

The Wildcats' big victory Saturday at West Virginia was enough to nudge them past the Ducks, who are No. 2 in both polls but are getting held back by computer ratings that lag behind the other highly ranked teams.

The Crimson Tide (.9625) is still solidly in first, and Florida (.9310) grabbed a firmer grip on second with a 44-11 victory over South Carolina on Saturday.

The Gators are tops in the computer ratings and Kansas State is second. The Wildcats (.9111) beat West Virginia 55-14 for their third Big 12 road victory.

Fourth-place Oregon (.8966), coming off a 43-21 win at Arizona State, is sixth in the computer ratings.

Notre Dame is fifth in the standings heading into its game at Oklahoma. The Sooners are eighth.

LSU is sixth and unbeaten Oregon State is seventh.

The Ducks aren't likely to gain any ground this week unless the teams in front of them lose. Oregon plays Colorado (1-6) at home, while the rest of the teams ahead of the Ducks play ranked opponents.

Oregon should be able to start making up ground Nov. 3. The Ducks play USC that day, then go to Cal. They finish with Stanford at home and Oregon State in Corvallis. Oregon would also have to play in the Pac-12 championship game if it gets that far.

The all-SEC BCS championship game between LSU and Alabama last year notwithstanding, it would seem this season the SEC stands a better chance of working itself out by Dec. 1.

If Alabama and Florida keep winning they'll play each other that day in the SEC championship for a spot in the national title game.

The presence of a trainee during endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) may have negative implications, including increased procedure time and complications. Researchers from the University of Calgary retrospectively reviewed 607 EBUS procedures, of which a trainee was present for 512. Significant differences were seen when a trainee was present vs when no trainee was present for procedure length (58.32 vs 37.69 min) and for the dose of propofol used (178.28 vs 137.11 mg). In addition, more complications were seen in the trainee group (24 vs 1). This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

NEW ORLEANS Compared to six years ago, the number of orthopedic surgeons willing to see a child with a broken arm who is covered by Medicaid has dropped 39 percent, and even children with private insurance may face obstacles in getting a timely appointment, according to research presented Oct. 21 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

In the study, "National Access to Pediatric Fracture Care," five general orthopedic practices were identified in each state. Each office was called with a private cellphone using the following script: "My 10-year-old son broke his arm while out of the country last week. He was splinted and told to see an orthopedic surgeon within one week. His fracture does not involve the growth plate."

Only 23.2 percent (58 out of 250) of the practices across the country agreed to schedule an appointment for a pediatric fracture patient with Medicaid. Of the offices that declined an appointment request, 38 percent said that they do not accept Medicaid patients. The 10 states with the lowest Medicaid reimbursement rates offered an appointment 6 percent of the time; the 10 states with the highest level of reimbursement, 44 percent. The same group of 10 lowest Medicaid reimbursement states offered an appointment to a PPO patient 88 percent of the time, and the 10 best Medicaid reimbursement states, 82 percent of the time. Eighty-two percent of the offices nationwide agreed to see a patient with private PPO insurance. Nine states were identified where all five offices refused the Medicaid patient, but all five accepted the PPO patient (Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Texas).

Compared to data published in 2006, the number of offices in 2012 willing to see a child with private insurance has declined from 92 percent to 82 percent. The number of offices willing to see a child with a fracture and Medicaid insurance has decreased from 62 percent to 23 percent a decline of 39 percentage points.

"Underinsured children continue to have difficulty accessing care for their fractures," said study author Christopher Iobst, MD, who cited low Medicaid reimbursement rates as the most likely reason for practices refusing to see patients. In addition, "patients with private insurance are also being turned away at an increasing rate" for a variety of reasons. Forty-six percent of the offices contacted in the study were unable to refer the family to an orthopedist who would take care of the child.

"This paradigm shift has resulted in a greater number of children getting referred to pediatric tertiary care centers (hospitals) for their care, even for routine injuries," said Dr. Iobst. While receiving care at these centers is beneficial, "many patients are forced to drive long distances to receive care for routine injuries. This places an unnecessary burden on families that often have limited resources."

Make A Business Splash Through These Website Marketing Ideas ...

TIP! Open accounts on social networking sites, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, and send out information about your business. Exercise great restraint in these efforts, though.

Don?t just cast your products and business out onto the general public and hope it works. It is not going to swim; it might sink. Maybe it is something to do with the arts. You need to perfect it, get feedback from friends and family, figure your supply costs and time, and settle on a price. The tips mentioned below should point you in the right direction with regards to website marketing .

TIP! Watch how your brand is discussed online, then use this type of language in your advertising copy. This allows you to establish a rapport with your customers using their vocabulary.

Include a choice of several specials on the order check-out page. For example, you can offer products at half-price if the customer orders a certain amount. You can really thin out your extra merchandise and boost your sales by doing this while simultaneously promoting goodwill from your customer who will feel he or she is getting a really great deal.

TIP! A CRM is an excellent way to maintain a database of all your customers who bought products from you. You can then use this database to identify who your customers are and what their purchase histories entail.

Use banners that don?t actually look like banners on your website. Instead, try to make them appear to be a clickable link to more content. A lot of people are wary of ads, this will attract them.

TIP! One way to become an authority or subject-matter expert is to compile a relevant glossary on your website. This can help your customers figure out what they need to know, making them more likely to visit your site again.

Prepare your funds in case you need to buy a great domain name. You are not likely to find the same domain name as your company. By spending about $1500 you can get a domain that is reasonable.

TIP! When you link to another page on your site, use your keywords in the anchor text. Keep visitors on your site by linking to other related content on your site.

Descriptive and eloquent words are important to enhance the professionalism on your site. Adjectives are sexy, so use them often to pad your item descriptions. Develop your own unique vocabulary that will catch people?s attention. Make your readers want to come back and hear more of your thoughts.

TIP! You may want a flashy site but, do not make it too much for your customers to process. Studies show that once someone clicks on a website, they decide whether to stay or click away within five seconds.

Blogging is a great adjunct to any online marketing business. Frequent blogging is a great way of keeping your potential customers informed and up to date about your business. Additionally, a blog increases the size of your website, which causes your search engine visibility to increase, which gives you more visitors in this long run.

TIP! Watching what your competitors do is a key aspect of the Internet marketing game. Every market out there has many businesses competing for clients.

Write quality articles and send them to magazines, newspapers and online publications. Always add your website and business information in the ?about me? section of your article. Speak to editor and offer a free sample or commissions as an affiliate in return for publishing your articles.

TIP! Try to make your website memorable. Web surfers have so many choices these days when it comes to websites, so you really need to put legitimate energy into developing a site that is unique and engaging.

Letting customers sign up to receive your Ezine is quite effective as an online marketing method, particularly if you understand how to go about creating an Ezine that enables you to relate well to your customers. Include personal family photos of yourself or your employees. Don?t be afraid to share funny or interesting stories from your personal life with your readers. Peak your costumers interest with great articles in the eZine.

TIP! Offer a promotion for a short period to improve the page rank of your website. Dependent on what type of promotion you are running, it is possible that outside information and deals websites will link through to yours.

Consider rewriting your content from time to time to give your site a different look. Continue employing the Internet promotion techniques that are successful but keep trying new methods to increase your business. Also, make sure that you listen to your customer?s reviews and opinions.

TIP! Analyzing users common complaints can give you clues toward choosing a great niche. Also, you will want to figure out why they are complaining.

Show proof that your product works on your website. It is easy to claim that your product is effective, but without good, solid proof, your audience may not buy it. This illustrates why you need to sell any products you have used if possible.

TIP! Cross merchandising is a great way to increase revenue by offering similar items to customers who make a purchase. For instance, if you sell shirts on your site and a customer buys a Hawaiian shirt, send them links to the other Hawaiian shirts you sell.

It is common knowledge that an authority position in a business generates respect. Let others know that you?re your own boss. A title such as ?President? or ?CEO? holds weight within the business world.

TIP! Try having events and promotions for your site. A one-dollar sale is a great way to get people in your virtual door.

The advice shared here contains tried and true expertise that you can use along with your own business ideas. These efforts will really make a difference for the success of your business. Before long, your business will be bringing in real money and you will be a success.

NEW ORLEANS -- A study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has documented that boys in the U.S. are experiencing the onset of puberty six months to two years earlier than reported in previous research.

The study, "Secondary Sexual Characteristics in Boys: Data from the Pediatric Research in Office Settings Network," will be published in the November 2012 Pediatrics and published online Oct. 20 to coincide with the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans. The trend toward earlier onset of puberty in girls is now generally accepted and supported by extensive research. Until now, little research was available on the age of onset of puberty in boys in contemporary times.

The study was designed and conducted through the AAP Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) practice-based research network, a system of hundreds of pediatricians nationwide who contribute data to AAP-led scientific studies on children's health. A 1997 PROS study was the first large study to document earlier pubertal onset in US girls. For the study of pubertal characteristics in boys, 212 practitioners in 144 pediatric offices in 41 states recorded information on more than 4,100 boys.

This new research found that the observed mean ages of stage 2 genital and pubic hair growth, and early testicular enlargement standard indications of pubertal onset were six months to two years earlier than documented by data several decades earlier. Pediatricians recorded the earliest stage of puberty as occurring in non-Hispanic white boys at age 10.14 years; in non-Hispanic African-American boy at age 9.14 years, and in Hispanic boys at age 10.4.

Overall, African-American boys were more likely to start puberty earlier than white or Hispanic boys. Study authors say the causes and public health implications of an apparent shift toward a lower age of puberty onset for boys is unclear and warrants further research.

"Contemporary data on the ages of pubertal characteristics in U.S. boys from onset to maturity, lacking until now, are needed by pediatricians, public health scientists, and parents," said study author Marcia E. Herman-Giddens, DrPH. "Following changes in growth and development is an important part of assessing the health of the nation's children. I am grateful to the pediatricians and the boys who participated in this exciting study."

"All parents need to know whether their sons are maturing within the contemporary age range, but, until now, this has not been known for U.S. boys," said PROS Director Richard C. Wasserman, MD, MPH, FAAP. "The PROS study provides 21st century standards."

"The landmark PROS study of the 1990s provided contemporary data for girls' puberty," Dr. Wasserman said. "A study on boys puberty was a logical follow-up. Our pediatric endocrinologist colleagues now use the PROS puberty assessment training materials in their own studies and fellowship training."

Ylcea's magic system

Spelheim: The First Magewar

In a realm of magic, war rages. Will the continent be consumed by strife, or will the people unite against the greater danger?

On magic:While magicians as a collective play a significant role in Ylcea, the individual mage is much less impressive.

Magicians are a vast minority, even in the City. All magic is innate, there is no spellchanting unless it helps your character concentrate. Training will make you more efficient. Individual differences in both endurance and power exist. The Algam people grow up with magic permeating their bodies, and generally make more powerful mages than humans.

Magical power:
In Ylcea, magic is a birthright - only a select few possess it, and the majority of these people live their lives in ignorance. Magicians possess a replenishing pool of energy, also known as mana. This pool ordinarily lies dormant, sealed deep within the mage's soul. For a mana seal to break on its own is exceedingly rare. However, any mana seal within the City walls is automatically broken. This is how Spelheim has monopolized magic for centuries.

It is one of the Council's greatest desires to discover how the Apostate broke the mana seals of those living in Algam, and they fear she might provide the same service to Id-Heren.

Magicians can only go for so long without using magic. Mana will build up, initially causing a debilitating fever after around seven days, with death following some days after. This complicates hiding one?s magic, although it is still quite possible to do.

In the countryside, there are very little reasons for wanting to hide. Being allowed to move to the holy grounds of the capital is considered a great fortune. Tax reductions are given to villages or Towns that aid in bringing magicians to the City. In the City, hiding one?s magic is punished as a crime.

Schools:

Elemental magic:
Elemental magic is what humans and beastlings awaken if their broken mana seal forms normal magic circuits in the soul. Each magician is born to one Domain: Air, Water, Earth or Fire. In effect, magic controls states, not elements. Air mages control gases, Water mages control fluids, Earth mages control solids, and Fire mages control plasmas. This magic system considers even low-temperature fires proper plasmas.

Elemental magic functions under these three three basic rules: Mana is Life, Mana is Energy, and Mana Rejects Mana.

Mana is life.
Every living being possesses some measure of life-force, which is proportionately depleted as that organisms ages and sickens. Mana is not convertible into life-force: magicians live no longer or healthier. Life-force is convertible to mana, however, and a select few City mages are taught to cast from lifespan - their own as well as others'.

Mana is energy.
Magic is the practice of manifesting mana as worldly energy. All magicians can manifest kinetic energy - they may move the state of their Domain. Further specializations are determined by Talents.

Mana rejects mana.
As life is mana, and mana rejects itself, it is impossible to cast magic on a living being. Magic cannot pull a man's heart out, but a sufficiently skilled user may pull at lifeless body parts such as hair, and in theory, nails and skin. Mana does not reject magic, however - a magical fire is no longer any different than a real fire, and it can set a man aflame. (However, it would be nigh impossible to manifest a fire directly against skin, or inside someone's lungs or gastric tract.)

Elemental Talents:
Each domain has its own Talents, innate specializations that determine a magician's capabilities. Catagorizing them is one of the City's efforts, but it's a rather debated science. Most magicians possess two Talents, but plenty possess only a single, more powerful one. Three is not unheard of. Four has only appeared a few times in the history of the City, and when it did, each individual Talent was uselessly weak.

The Creation Talent allows magicians to not only move their Domain, but also create it. Fire magicians create fire. Earth magicians may create rocks or (precious) metals, but only miniscule quantities. Air and Water Creation exist, but unlike earth, the City sees little use for them. The magic system in this roleplay takes Einstein's mass?energy equivalence into account by outright ignoring it. Either that or Ylcean lightspeed is equal to the pace of a snail. (It isn't. Vision would be weird.)

The Long-Range Talent is self-explanatory. A Fire magician with both Long-Range and Creation can light a fire from miles away, given a clear line of sight. A Fire Magician with only a powerful Long-Range Talent, however, may direct the lightning in a thunderstorm, or quell a raging fire by pulling it from its fuel.

Enchanting is the Talent to create persistent magic - without a secondary Talent, it will limit itself to movement. The sewerage of the City is largely dependent on these Water enchantments. Long-Range Enchanting Air mages are in charge of manipulating the weather. More skilled mages may attach mobile enchantments to objects, rather than the more common enchantments locked into place. Enchanted merchandise is always in high demand.

Splitting is an Air and Water-exclusive Talent, capable of separating components within a mix. Air Splitting is a versatile talent. It can isolate oxygen to augment fires and ease breathing. With favorable air streams and sufficient time, it is possible to commit murder through nitrogen asphyxiation. Water Splitters may separate poisons from water, and enchantments in this group are highly valued.

Trapping is a Talent related to Enchanting. Trapper magicians are capable of casting enchantments that discharge all their mana on command, as opposed to gradually over time. Normal Air magicians do not have the output to blow a man off his feet, but Air Trappers may cast ten spells, discharge them simultaneously, and do just that. Due to the nature of this Talent, it is limited by the magician's mana pool and preparation time, not output capacity. Earth Trappers are often seen training with reinforced, sturdier weapons.

Multiple is a very common Talent, characterized by the capability of manifesting mana at more than one site at a time. To illustrate, a Creation Fire mage with this talent may create multiple fires. An Earth magician with this Talent may lift objects with stability, in the sense that a chair with three legs never wobbles. Practiced Earth mages with this Talent may retrieve small objects from across a room, and the truly skilled possess such control that they may manipulate a quill to write.

Dampening is one of the more important Talents in the war. It counteracts movement within a Domain. Fire stays in space, and is resistant to manipulation by other mages - Dampening is more mana-efficient than most other Talents, and only a Trap-burst can temporarily overcome the inhibition. Skilled Air mages this Talent can lock the air in space, muting any sounds within the affected area. Among students, it is considered a useful Talent for sneaking into the kitchen at midnight.

Sensor is a Talent that is widely debated. Some measure of this Talent is inherently present in both Splitting and Dampening, but it may also manifest on its own. It is a highly desired Talent with Long Range. A lot of military intelligence is derived from Sensor squads, as Air and Earth Sensors may detect enemy movement from miles away. It is terribly mana-inefficient however, and may only be used in bursts. I am limiting this Talent in player characters. "Simply knowing" things is bad writing, even if magic can explain it. You may not be a walking lie detector (Air mage, breathing rate) or someone who can feel movement from miles away. You may detect poisons in water, if you wish.
Note: Water Sensors that stray too far from the coast are driven insane by what their magic teaches them about the sea.

A number of unidentified Talents exist - humans may lack the magical output or creativity to use them. Players are free to think of their own Talents. We'll toss any original ones around a bit to make it fit the system.

Soul magic:
Soul magic is what happens when a magician's mana seal is incorrectly, or incompletely broken. Mana seeps out and carves magic circuits in an aberrant fashion. Though almost always fatal, exceptions exist. Generally, this group does not convert mana into energy (or matter) - it manipulates mana itself. The City has no experience with Soul magic, and thus no Talents are defined. Both the Apostate and the Red King possess Soul magic, and while I shan't delve too deeply into these two characters at this point, the Apostate is capable of moving around her own mana, and the Red King can convert his mana into excessive life-force. I realize this class provides the most personalized magic, but I'd rather not have an too many Soul mages - it would not match with the lore. Due to the complex nature of this group, the specifics would be discussed jointly.

Holy magic:
Both Spelheim's and Id-Heren's priests claim to some holy influence. While holy magic as a school does not truly exist, a number of magical artifacts exist within Ylcea. Some of these do rest in the hands of the Church. The Citian Church calls them their tools of the Maker. In truth, these artifacts were created by Enchanting-type Soul magicians in an ancient past. Several of these are still hidden through the land.
