LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigerian aviation officials say a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Lagos will need to make an emergency landing because it has problems with its landing gear.
Harold Demuren, director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, told The Associated Press that the flight Saturday declared an emergency prior to its arrival to Lagos. Demuren said firefighting equipment and personnel were standing by for the arrival of Flight No. QR592 at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
Officals with Qatar Airways could not be immediately reached for comment. The company's website showed the Airbus A330-300 aircraft had an estimated arrival time of 1 p.m. local time (1200 GMT).

LONDON (Reuters) - The royal family said on Friday it would not lodge a complaint with the country's press watchdog over the publication of photographs showing Prince Harry cavorting naked in a Las Vegas hotel room.
Pictures of the 27-year-old prince, third-in-line to the throne, surfaced in August on a U.S. gossip website and were later published by the best-selling Sun tabloid - the only British title to run the photos.
Harry's office in St. James's Palace said the royals had decided not to pursue a formal complaint given the prince's current deployment in Afghanistan. It said it informed the Press Complaints Commission on Thursday.
By contrast, Harry's brother Prince William and his wife Kate launched a criminal complaint against the photographer who took topless pictures of her while the couple were on vacation in a French villa.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as the royal couple are formally known, were also seeking damages from French gossip magazine Closer, which first published the photos this month.
They have won an injunction banning the magazine from further publication and ordering it to hand the pictures over to the royal couple.
"Prince Harry is currently focused entirely on his deployment in Afghanistan, so to pursue a complaint relating to his private life would not be appropriate at this time and would prove to be a distraction," a statement from the palace said.
Harry, The Queen's grandson, returned to Afghanistan this month to fly attack helicopters in the NATO-led war against Taliban insurgents.
"We remain of the opinion that a hotel room is a private space where its occupants would have a reasonable expectation of privacy," the palace said.
The naked photos proved an embarrassment for the family after a summer of well-received Diamond Jubilee celebrations to mark Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne and royal appearances at the London Olympics.

Welcome back to the land that never stops rocking.
Yet another tribute album lands, this time called Re-Machined, which is a tribute to Deep Purple's album Machine Head. For the most part the covers on here are not that bad. You do get two songs twice to pad out the album. And one of those doubles is the worst cover version of anything I have ever heard. The Flaming Lips' putrid version of "Smoke on the Water" should have been left to the last track and not stuck in the middle to ruin the flow of this album. The other double is "Space Truckin'." To be honest, this one is for completists only.
Dare have released Calm before the Storm 2 and it is as good as its name-sake. In fact, according to Darren Warren, Dare's mainman, and sometime/current Thin Lizzy keyboardist, it is better than original because it was recorded as he wanted. Possibly only the true fan will notice the difference, but it does include tracks in the form of "Precious" and "Cold Wind Will Blow". Call it a slight tweak on a classic AOR release.
Pride of Lions are back with an album called Immortal that just oozes class and quality. Like House of Lords, this bunch churn out melodic AOR with ease. The songs are catchy and a tiny bit cheesy, but no less enjoyable. If you want something that is damn good, but not too in your face, then check this album out. I defy you not to be singing along on the second listen through.
Kix's Live in Baltimore is the latest release from this vastly overrated band. They were rubbish live back in the day and this shows it in its glory. "Blow My Fuse" is just as dumb as it always was, but no less catchy and crude. And their "hit" ballad "Don't Close Your Eyes" doesn't stand the test of time as well as similar songs of the day. Krokus always did similar stuff so much better than these guys. A release for fans only.
Dokken's new release Broken Bones is a surprising return to form. Don Dokken's voice sounds as good if not better than it has ever been. The album hints at the band's heyday without merely cloning their hits as an excuse to tour. The songwriting on here is first rate and there are tracks that clearly stack up to their best. Those thinking the lack of George Lynch in the band would hurt the quality of the tracks are proven wrong. A must for fans of the band and anyone who ever liked Dokken. A welcome and pleasant return for this LA band.
Downspirit come at us with Bulletproof? and it ain't a bad affair. While it drifts into Nickelback territory on some tracks, overall it is just a decent hard rock album. The songwriting is probably not where it should be yet and the tracks can sound a bit samey. There is something there that is hard to ignore. Certainly a band to watch as they evolve into something really good.

The founder of a national antihunger organization has been charged with bilking the charity of more than half a million dollars and is expected to plead guilty in the coming days, according to The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky.
Prosecutors allege Hugh Vanderbilt ?Stan? Curtis stole $183,354 directly from Louisville-based USA Harvest, cashing donor checks or depositing them in his own bank account, and charged the organization for more than $370,000 in personal expenses.
The 63-year-old stockbroker founded USA Harvest in 1989 and has received numerous national honors for philanthropy, including a President?s Volunteer Action Award presented in 1987 by President Clinton. The charity collects leftover items from restaurants, hotels, and stores to feed the hungry and says it has distributed more than 457 billion pounds of food.
Mr. Curtis faces federal charges of mail fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns. His lawyer, Scott C. Cox, said, ?I expect the case to be resolved quickly with the government.?
NASA's Mars rover Curiosity reached out and touched a Martian rock with its huge robotic arm for the first time, then took off on its longest Red Planet drive to date.
Curiosity spent the past several days investigating a strange pyramid-shaped stone named "Jake Matijevic," testing out some of the gear at the end of its 7-foot-long (2.1 meters) arm. These tools include the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), which measures elemental composition, and the Mars Hand Lens Imager close-up camera, or MAHLI.
The rover performed these initial "contact science" operations on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 22 and 23), researchers said. Photos snapped on those days show Curiosity's arm sidled up against "Jake Matijevic," with the arm's turret obscuring most of the 16-inch-tall (25 centimeters) rock.
"I did a science! 1st contact science on rock target Jake," the Curiosity team announced Saturday (Sept. 22) via the rover's Twitter feed @MarsCuriosity, which has more than 1.1 million followers. "Here's an action shot." [Curiosity Mars Rover: 11 Amazing Facts]
Curiosity also zapped "Jake Matijevic" with the laser on its ChemCam instrument, which reads rock composition from the vaporized bits. Comparing the results should help cross-calibrate the two instruments, researchers said.
The ChemCam work wrapped up Monday (Sept. 24), at which point Curiosity embarked on a 138-foot (42 m) drive ? the longest one-day jaunt for the rover since it landed inside Mars' Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5.
Curiosity is making its way toward a site called Glenelg, which lies 1,300 feet (400 m) from the rover's touchdown site. Before Monday's drive, the mission team had said Curiosity was about halfway to Glenelg.
Scientists will likely soon begin looking for sandy areas to try out Curiosity's scooping system for the first time. The arm will deposit bits of Martian soil into the analytical instruments on the rover's body, which are known as SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) and CheMin (short for Chemistry & Mineralogy).?

The first use of Curiosity's rock-boring drill, which also sits at the end of the rover's arm, will come sometime after that, researchers have said.
While team members are keen to see what Curiosity discovers at Glenelg, the $2.5 billion rover's main destination is the base of Mount Sharp. This odd mountain rises 3.4 miles (5.5 km) into the Red Planet sky from Gale Crater's center, and its foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.
Those foothills lie about 6 miles (10 km) away from Curiosity's landing site. The rover ? whose main task is to determine if the Gale area could ever have supported microbial life ? may be ready to turn its wheels toward the interesting deposits near the end of the year, scientists have said.
The rock "Jake Matijevic" takes its name from Curiosity's surface operations systems chief engineer, who died Aug. 20 at the age of 64. Matijevic, who was based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., also worked on all three previous Mars rovers ? Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity ? NASA officials said.

On September 27, the results of an economic impact study of the mountain bike trail system at the Forever Wild Coldwater Mountain Doug Ghee Nature Preserve and Recreation Area will be announced at the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce building. The building is located at 1330 Quintard Ave., Anniston Ala. Joseph Jankoski, Executive Director of the Calhoun County Development Corporation, will make the announcement at 8:30 a.m.
The study, entitled ?Economic Impact Analysis of the Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail,? was funded by Solutia Inc., a subsidiary of Eastman Chemical Company, and illustrates the potential economic impact that the recently opened and planned mountain biking trails on the nearby Forever Wild tract could have on the cities of Anniston, Oxford, Hobson City, and surrounding communities in Calhoun County.
This summer, the Alabama State Lands Division opened a new public access road, a trailhead, and phase one of the Coldwater Mountain biking trails. Phase one of the multi-year project consists of 11 miles of trail in two loops. Since opening phase one, progress has been made in the planning of phase two of the trails and a second trailhead, which will be on the north side of the mountain near Alabama Highway 202.
State Lands Director Patricia Powell said this project is an example of the potential economic opportunities the Forever Wild Land Trust provides for Alabamians. ?These trails and trailheads are being designed by some of the best trail builders in the United States,? Powell said. ?The State Lands Division and Forever Wild Land Trust are excited about the partnerships that have been developed throughout this project. We look forward to working on more projects like this one.?
The Forever Wild Coldwater Mountain Doug Ghee Nature Preserve and Recreation Area trail system is the result of cooperative effort between the Forever Wild Land Trust, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources State Lands Division, Anniston Water Works and Sewer Board, Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, Northeast Alabama Bicycle Association, International Mountain Biking Association-Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, Alabama Department of Transportation, Alabama Power Company, the City of Anniston, and Solutia Inc..
The Coldwater Mountain Tract is comprised of three land acquisitions totaling 4,083 acres of mountainous pine and hardwood forest northwest of I-20 in Calhoun County. The tracts secure a large portion of the local watershed for Coldwater Spring, a unique ecological environment and source of drinking water for local municipalities. This tract was dedicated as the Doug Ghee Nature Preserve and Recreation Area by the Forever Wild Board of Trustees in recognition of the former state senator and Forever Wild board member.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - An illegal strike spread through AngloGold Ashanti's South African operations on Wednesday, while Anglo American Platinum said it could start firing unlawful strikers on Thursday, as the country's miners grapple to rein in weeks of labor unrest.
A wave of wildcat action is roiling South Africa's mines despite the end of an illegal six-week stoppage at platinum producer Lonmin in which 46 people were killed and the price of the white metal was pushed higher.
Mining shares tanked in Johannesburg on Wednesday, with Amplats losing almost 4.5 percent after it said it has lost 20,000 ounces to the strike action since Sept 12, while AngloGold shares shed over 3 percent.
Most of AngloGold's 35,000 workers have joined the wildcat action that began last week at its Kopanang mine, spokesman Alan Fine said. The company is the world's No.3 bullion producer and South Africa accounted for about 32 percent of its global output of close to 2 million ounces of gold in the first half of 2012.
Illegal strike action has also gripped Gold Fields and the world's top platinum producer Amplats, a unit of global mining group Anglo American.
Amplats said in a statement that attendance at its four Rustenburg mines remained below 20 percent. It said it would take action against those who remained on strike on Thursday, including dismissals.
It has made such threats before but then extended the deadlines, perhaps mindful of the violence unleashed when rival Impala Platinum fired strikers in January.
Much of the platinum sector in South Africa has been battling with soaring costs and weak demand and Anglo American launched a review of its Amplats' operations months ago.

Malema, the former head of the ruling ANC's Youth League who was ousted from the party for ill-discipline in April, is tapping into a swelling vein of anger among miners to revive his political career and campaign to unseat President Jacob Zuma.
Lesiba Seshoka, spokesman for the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), said the AngloGold strikers wanted a minimum of 16,000 rand ($2,000) a month but the company said it had not received a formal wage demand yet.
If the demand is 16,000 rand it would represent a rise of as much as 400 percent on the basic wages of the lowest-paid workers in the sector. AngloGold and some of its rivals have two-year wage deals that are in place until the middle of 2013.
The NUM does not support the strikes but elsewhere demands have included the resignation of its leaders, a reflection of discontent among miners who regard the union as out of touch and too close to mine managers and the ANC government.
Gold Fields, the world's fourth largest producer, said on Tuesday workers had reneged on a deal NUM claimed to have sealed to end a two-week strike at its KDC West operation in South Africa and miners at its Beatrix mine had also downed tools.
?Illegal strikes erupted in the platinum sector in the form of a bloody turf war between the NUM and the more militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
The strikes have now spread elsewhere but there is no evidence yet of AMCU involvement in the unrest.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Life thrives on Planet Earth. In even the most inhospitable places -- the freezing Antarctic permafrost, sun-baked saltpans in Tunisia or the corrosively acidic Rio Tinto in Spain -- pockets of life can be found. Some of these locations have much in common with environments found on Mars, as discovered by orbiters and rovers exploring the surface. Researchers from the Centro de Astrobiolog?a (CAB) in Madrid have made a series of field trips to the most Mars-like places on Earth.
They presented some of their findings at the European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid on September 24.
Dr Felipe G?mez, the project leader said, "The big questions are: what is life, how can we define it and what are the requirements for supporting life? To understand the results we receive back from missions like Curiosity, we need to have detailed knowledge of similar environments on Earth. Metabolic diversity on Earth is huge. In the field campaigns, we have studied ecosystems in situ and we have also brought samples back to the laboratory for further analysis. We have found a range of complex chemical processes that allow life to survive in unexpected places."
Over the past 4 years, the team has carried out field trips to Chott el Jerid, a salt pan in Tunisia, the Atacama desert in Chile, Rio Tinto in Southern Spain and Deception Island in Antarctica.
G?mez and his colleagues visited Chott el Jerid salt pan 3 times between 2010 and 2012 and Atacama desert in 2010.
The team set up weather stations at a series of locations at each site. The weather stations measured surface and air temperatures, humidity, ultraviolet radiation levels, wind direction and velocity. The data collected from these field campaigns is comparable to the data now being collected by the Remote Meteorological Monitoring Station (REMS) carried by Curiosity, which was built by a team from CAB-INTA.
"We studied measurements in different locations over several daily cycles. As well as the large-scale changes to all the parameters through the day, we observed a small rise in the surface temperature after dusk. We found that this is caused by water condensing on the surface and hydrating salts, which releases heat in an exothermic reaction. This is very interesting from the perspective of the REMS instrument on Curiosity -- it gives us a way to follow when liquid water might be present on the surface," said G?mez.
Cloud cover in the sky could also be tracked through fluctuations in measurements of the solar radiation and luminosity (ultraviolet flux variations).
"The correlations we've found between these parameters and cloud cover means that we can use Mars orbiter measurements of cloud conditions to give us an indication of changes that are going on at the surface," said G?mez.
The team used probes to study the electrical properties of the soil. By studying changes in resistivity with depth, they were able to identify different materials underground and the water-content. By setting up criss-crossing 'transepts' of resistivity probes, the teams were able to build up a 3-dimensional picture of the structure of the subsurface.
They also drilled samples to a depth of 3.6 metres in Chott El Jerid and to 6 metres in Atacama. The core samples showed subsurface ecosystems of completely different kinds of bacteria from those found on the surface. The populations of bacteria found at the surface decreased with depth, but there was an increase in archaea, and also single-celled halophilic organisms that are able to oxidize metabolites under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
"In both Atacama and Chott El Jerid, we found ecosystems at a depth of a few metres that were completely isolated from the surface," said G?mez.
The surface of Chott El Jerid salt pan is very pure sodium chloride with traces of other salts. The team found small accumulations of organic matter inside the salt crystals. When they analysed the samples, they found that these were populations of halophilic, salt-loving bacteria that were dormant.
G?mez said, "This was a really exciting find. These condensed accumulations of halophilic bacteria could have been dormant for possibly hundreds of years. Back in the laboratory, we were able to rehydrate the samples and restore the bacteria to life."
The Mars Exploration Rover, Opportunity, discovered jarosite on the surface of Mars. Jarosite is only synthesised in the presence of water and contains very high concentrations of metals, such as iron. The team studied outcrops of jarosite at Rio Tinto, areas that have extraordinarily high levels of acidity. Unexpectedly, they found photosynthetic bacteria growing between the layers in salt crusts. When they analysed the bacteria back in the laboratory, they made a further discovery: that iron appears to protect the bacteria from ultraviolet radiation.
G?mez explains, "We took two samples of the bacteria, one with iron present and one without and exposed them to high levels of ultraviolet radiation. For the sample without iron, nearly all the bacteria were destroyed. For the sample with iron present the population survived. There was a small increase due to toxic super-oxides being created, but the protective effect of ferric compounds was significant."
Their findings have implications for the development of life on Earth: early in its formation, Earth had no oxygen and its atmosphere would not have given the protection from ultraviolet radiation that it provides today.
"What the bacteria we found in Rio Tinto show is that the presence of ferric compounds can actually protect life. This could mean that life formed earlier on Earth than we thought. These effects are also relevant for the formation of life on the surface of Mars," says G?mez.
The team also found that salt provides stable conditions that can allow life to survive in very hard environments.
"Within salts, the temperature and humidity are protected from fluctuations and the doses of ultraviolet radiation are very low," explained G?mez. "In the laboratory, we placed populations of different bacteria between layers of salt a few millimetres thick and exposed them to Martian conditions. Nearly 100% of deinoccocus radiodurans , a hardy type of bacteria survived being irradiated. But fascinatingly, about 40% of acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans -- a very fragile variety of bacteria also survived when protected by a salt crust."

I think because of this, some part of me will always be drawn to World of Warcraft ? it is, in essence, a very goal-oriented game; there?s always something to be working towards, whether you?re a hardcore raider chasing heroic achievements, or simply like good old boring down-to-earth me, trying to collect 150 unique companion pets before the release of Mists of Pandaria.
In less than 24 hours, the expansion will launch, and I?m happy to report that I?ve completed what I set out to do well ahead of time, but why stop there? I?m sure I don?t have to tell you, a pet hunter?s job is never done. I?ve always been a rabid an enthusiastic collector of companion pets, which makes the upcoming pet capture-and-battle system feel like it?s right up my alley, but it?s also very exciting to see that more and more people are beginning to discover the joys of vanity pets, particularly those who have otherwise expressed little interest before.

Killed every Baradin Fox I came across, but after a pile of fox corpses still no luck. Screw it, finally just spent 200 commendations at the vendor for this pet and called it a day. Totally worth it. Has great dancing animation!
